Thursday had a big snag but in the end it turned out great. We were planning on going up to Mammoth by the Montana border and working our way back down. We stopped by Beryl Springs and then the Artist's Paintpots Trail but then up near Mammoth we ran over a small sharp obsidian rock that punctured our tire and gave us a slow leak. I noticed our tire pressure light was on and got out and heard/saw the hissing hole in our tire. We were way out in the middle of nowhere and were kind of freaking out. We decided to keep driving carefully and hope for the best. Thankfully we just barely coasted into Mammoth with just enough air and they had an air pump at the first gas station. Unfortunately they had no mechanic/service businesses so we had to keep driving up to Gardiner which was in Montana where we again coasted in with barely enough air and spent the next couple hours in Gardiner while they replaced our front tires. They were pretty low on tread but not terribly so but they just weren't able to handle a dirt road filled with tons of small chunks of obsidian.
After our adventure in Gardiner we stopped at Mammoth Hot Springs but unfortunately didn't have time to explore the town of Mammoth like we had been hoping. We hurried back so we could get to Old Faithful in time. Which we did! And it was amazing!
